2010 Winner Dr. Benjamin A. Kamala



Benjamin A. Kamala, M.D.

Dr. Kamala earned a Doctor of Medicine Degree from the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS). He is currently an employee of the Ministry of Health (Tanzania) as a medical officer designated at the Kibaha Training Center and Tumbi Special Hospital (mainly serving injured patients). He is also the country's Trainer of Trainees (TOT) on Early Infant Diagnosis (EID) and prevention of Mother to Childhood Transmission (PMTCT) of HIV.

Dr. Kamala is currently on study leave pursuing a Master of Public Health Degree (M.P.H.) with a specialization in Health Economics and Health Promotion at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden. His main interest lies in the planning and implementation of community based health interventions. He also has a keen interest in working in areas of injury surveillance and prevention, reproductive and child health and HIV/AIDS programs - especially in remote areas. The title of Dr. Kamala's proposal was "Risk factors and health consequences of road traffic related injuries in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania” and he looks forward to collaborating with PeerCorps within his area of interest in Tanzania upon the completion of his graduate studies.

Dr. Kamala will receive a certificate of award and a $1,000 (U.S.) cash prize as the winner of the proposal competition.
